Art with Seniors
The ability of the arts to improve the quality of life for residents of nursing homes and other healthcare facilities is widely documented anecdotally.
Art projects also distract seniors from their physical pain and stimulate their cognitive faculties. The traditional arts used in the BAI program are especially useful in triggering memories while still encouraging participants to make meaningful decisions in their own work.
Human beings need artistic influences all the time, and there is a measurable difference in introducing creativity into the lives of residents in institutional settings. The project’s community can grow to include family and friends, who participated in the activities.
Community Benefits from Arts with Seniors Program
- Senior Artist own their art work. Their artwork can be worn for their pleasure, given as gifts or sold at a community implemented fair or other project.
- The community will have the opportunity to learn from the artistic talents that seniors have to offer. Some of those talents are sometimes unknown to younger generations.
Brooklyn Art Incubator, Inc. will provide access to art materials, and a local artist to teach the class. We find artists from the local community who are skilled in building enthusiasm and confidence through art to older adults. By contracting with BAI, an organization can provide a free means for seniors to learn about art and have a social outlet.
How does BAI work with the Senior Community
The program was created to tap the potential of older adults. The programs are six to ten week courses that enable older adults to learn a variety of art methods.
The programs and supplies are provided free of charge to all seniors in the class. Art classes have been taught in assisted living communities, senior centers. We seek to offer our classes at art museums, and community centers to name a few possibilities. Any organization with access to a facility can host our Art with Seniors classes.
The classes provided are diverse and numerous:
- Drawing, Watercolor, Sculpture, Creative Writing, Jewelry Making
- Collage, Acrylic Painting, Arts and Crafts and Picture Album Development
